Quote: | Gayle King, Charles Barkley Near Deal to Host CNN Primetime Show
A news King and Sir Charles are getting ready to mix it up in an unorthodox way.
Gayle King and Charles Barkley are finalizing a deal that would have them jointly lead a primetime hour each week on CNN, according to people familiar with the matter. The pact is not complete and there is always the risk it may not come to fruition, one of these people says. CNN declined to make executives available for comment.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that a deal involving King was nearing completion, but it has been an open secret in TV-news circles that CNN has been courting both personalities — and others like them — for some time. Puck reported on negotiations with both King and Barkley earlier this year.
CBS News declined to offer immediate comment on expectations it had for King, who is also the center of its “CBS Mornings” on weekdays — a critical generator of ad dolls for the Paramount Global news-and-stations division. A spokesperson for Warner Bros. Discovery Sports, which has relied on Barkley for years as a host of its popular “Inside the NBA,” could not be reached for immediate comment. Warner Bros. Discovery also owns CNN.
The move, if completed, would come as CNN grapples with a severe downturn in viewership as well as a massive overhaul that has in recent months included layoffs and a significant recalibration of its programming. Under CEO Chris Licht, CNN has devoted its 9 p.m. hour to a rotating array of topics and anchors, sometimes presented in the form of town halls, and on other days, in one-on-one interviews with celebrities.
Enlisting King and Barkley could give CNN something approximating one of its best-known success stories: “Larry King Live.” That program, which ran on CNN at 9 p.m. from 1985 to 2010, featured the titular host holding forth in an interview every night with a newsmaker or celebrity, often in less rigorous fashion than a hard-charging traditional journalist. At its height, the show could generate viewership of around one million.
The new CNN program with King and Barkley appears to be coming together just weeks before the TV industry’s annual “upfront” sales session, when U.S. media companies try to sell billions of dollars in advertising ahead of their next cycle of new programming. A King and Barkley duo would certainly give CNN and its corporate parent something to talk about with Madison Avenue.
More to come…. |

Barkley has a big heart, and he really cares about sociopolitical issues. You can see it anytime you listen to him talk about things like race relations, gun violence or helping poor people to help themselves.
Would be interesting to see him host a show like that. He's always been one of my favorites ever since I was a little kid. |

What will the format be? Will Charles be asked serious political questions? He's very adamant about social issues. The Charles Barkley I think I know won't bite his tongue. If the show comes to fruition it'll be interesting, to say the least. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

CNN CEO Chris Licht has confirmed that former NBA star Charles Barkley and Gayle King will co-host a new weekly primetime show. Set to premiere this fall on the cable news network, the series will be titled King Charles.
King and Barkley announced the project together Saturday on TNT—which, like CNN, is also owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. The pair’s hour-long series is expected to air on Wednesdays.
During Saturday’s announcement, Barkley that when Licht proposed he partner with King for the show, he said “hell yeah.” Meanwhile, Variety reports that King promised the program will promote “a good conversation without tearing other people down.”
In a written statement to his CNN colleagues, Licht said that he was “thrilled” about the project.
“This show will be an exciting new way we are delivering culturally relevant programming and unique perspectives to our audience,” Licht wrote, “from two incredibly dynamic personalities.”
As Licht observed in his statement, both King and Barkley have taken on King Charles while remaining in other roles. King will continue to anchor CBS Mornings, and Barkley still has his contract with Warner Bros. Discovery’s WBD Sports. |

CNN’s new show, King Charles, hosted by Charles Barkley and Gayle King, is set to premiere on Nov. 29 at 10 p.m. ET and will run Wednesdays at that same time. The cable news show will feature conversations about the biggest stories in the news cycle.
However, the show is viewed as a limited-run series that will last at least through the first quarter of next year, per Variety.
“King Charles, an hourly talk show features the dynamic Gayle King and Charles Barkley engaging each other, their guests and their audience in freewheeling and authentic conversations centered around the week’s most interesting stories, moments and cultural themes,” a press release read.

The program will feature “a mix of in-studio and remote guests with a focus on conversations that are important, serious and often funny,” Amy Entelis, CNN’s executive vice president for talent and content development, told Variety in an email. “It will feel like you are spending time together with friends.”
Barkley and King have other obligations, of course, with the former having duties on NBA on TNT and the latter being needed during the 2024 Presidential election, which is why the project is being viewed as a limited-run series. |

Charles is outspoken. He's a no hold back conversationalist. I'm going to watch to see if he's politically astute or if he's like me, opinionated. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Didn't Chuck used to have his own show on TNT?
Guess I answered my own question, he had a show back in 2002-2003 when he first got started with EJ. |
